A group of scientists obtains permission to examine the Shroud of Turin. Several features lead the team to be convinced that it's an authentic burial shroud, but there is some question as to whether it could possibly be Jesus' image. During his examination of samples taken from the shroud, one geneticist discovers some cells--living skin cells. He speculates that they could be skin cells left by the buried person, after his resurrection. He secretly uses the cells to clone the person, successfully cloning Jesus himself.

That cloning sets the stage for book one James BeauSeigneur's Christ Clone Trilogy, In His Image. The clone, Christopher, is really a secondary character in the action of the book, but as world events swirl around him, it becomes clear that there's something special about this young man. The Middle East is in turmoil, the Dome of the Rock has been destroyed and the Jewish people are rebuilding the temple. Christopher has become a leader in the U.N. just as the U.N. has risen to a more prominent role in world affairs.

BeauSeigneur draws heavily on biblical prophecy (as you might expect). Whether he does so in a way that is faithful to the message of scripture, well, who can say? At times I wondered whether BeauSeigneur is writing as a Christian, or whether he's simply writing speculative fiction with biblical themes. Christopher seems to embody the character of Christ in many ways, yet BeauSeigneur also draws on New Age elements as well. (As a side note, while the language is fairly mild, I think his use of four-letter words would keep his books off the shelves of Christian bookstores.) I will be interested to see how Christopher continues to develop throughout the trilogy. Is he the reincarnation of Christ? Or the Antichrist? I guess I'll have to keep reading. . . .

In His Image Christ Clone Trilogy Book 1 James BeauSeigneur 9780985429805 Books Reviews

Definitely a unique twist on the End Times...you sympathize with the Anti-Christ, while railing against the Apostle John. The steps to the Apocalypse are accomplished rather adroitly in a matter-of-fact manner that seem rather obvious...but are they? There is an incessant amount of political/diplomatic maneuvering, but this is to be expected in a tale that is UN centered. Personally, I do not see the United Nations taking over the world with such seamless rapidity, but people do grasp at straws when all else looks bleak.
I read this trilogy about 10 years ago in paper back when I was a very young Christian and had many fond memories of it's gripping entertainment. The basic premise of the story which is centered around the concept of a pre-tribulation rapture is actually quite intriguing, and that is why it got a 3 star instead of 2. The writing is actually fairly amatuerish, kind of like watching a good movie with B acting going on. It's entertaining, but not necessarily one that you would read again.

I got it because of my memories and also because it was on sale at the time. I would not recommend it for full price.

Besides the just OK writing, one major point is that we have seen via 9-11 and other tragic events how the world's economy is linked to catastrophic events. This book doesn't even address such things. It's almost as if the people who are not directly impacted have had no strain put on their lives financially. No mention of the markets crashing, etc. which would likely happen in an event as epic as the rapture.

Besides that, there is the extreme artisitic license that is used to try and link some of the events to biblical accounts. I looked at all of the notes for each of the notes listed and some of them are plausible, and others are just wishful thinking.

In any case, I bought book two so that I can finish the trilogy as I want to satisfy my curiosity about my memories of the books. My recommendation for this - It's generally entertaining, but don't expect too much.
This is truly one of those books that makes you think, "What the f___ did I just read?"

I was led to this trilogy in the comments/reviews of the Left Behind series, of which I read the entire original series and two of the four prequels. (I also read the first book in the Prodigal Project series, which was awful, but I digress...) All of the reviews seemed to indicate that this trilogy far exceeded the Left Behind series, so I finally decided to read it.

I will say this, it is definitely not what I was expecting. A research team goes to investigate the Shroud of Turin (which has been proven to be a fake, but we'll overlook that for now), and finds living skin cells on it, presumably the living skin cells of Jesus. One of the scientists decides to clone the skin cells, and unwittingly gives birth to the Anti-Christ. Definitely an original idea -- pretty sure there is no other book on the whole of planet Earth that suggests the cloning of Christ is possible.

While I give the author many points for creativity, some of the things that occur in this story are pretty bizarre, even for and end-of-times novel. For that reason, I sometimes found myself distracted and unable to focus on the plot or characters.

One thing I did truly appreciate, however, is that the author does not take a literal interpretation of Revelation and just put it in a modern setting, which is basically what happened in the Left Behind series. The author takes a symbolic approach and includes something like a hundred footnotes to explain his literary devices.

Yes, I am going on to read book two. So, four stars for this book.
