Not the Faintest Trace The Sergeant Frank Hardy Mysteries Book 1 edition by Wendy M Wilson Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
1) Why I chose this book : Historical thrillers are one of my favorite genres and to read one about New Zealand was like icing on the cake2) Any course language present : Several uses of the f-word, dam* and hel* to add realism, but not overdone by any stretch
3) Type of book : I'd categorized it as more of an adventure/suspense yarn
4) Formatting/Editing : Only thing keeping book from a 5-star read as a bit more editing was needed - noted some dropped words in passages like "He been longing for battle" page 22 (needs the word 'had'), wrong prepositions"...her dress was torn and dirty and he face was white with shock" page 192 (he should be 'her') and incorrect word usage "all the mysteries were solved--accept the one about where the body was" page 260 (accept should be 'except').
5) Best/Worst aspect of book : Well developed characters and plot, great dialogue overall, engaging story. Wasn't aware this was categorized as a romance tho was kept very light which was fine as for me.
6) Favorite Passage : "His enemies would not escape from him, none of them. He was Anahera, the Angel of Death."
7) Bottom-line : Title reads "The Sergeant Frank Hardy Novels Book 1" so am hoping there is a sequel as I did really enjoy this book!

Not the Faintest Trace The Sergeant Frank Hardy Mysteries Book 1 edition by Wendy M Wilson Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Not the Faintest Trace is a cleverly-written debut by Ms. Wilson. Difficult to pin as a single genre, it combines historical fiction with mystery and romance, all overarched with a keen awareness of period tension between aboriginal, colonial, and immigrant groups. Each chapter begins with a historic newspaper excerpt, and the action of the chapter weaves these pieces together into a coherent and plausible plot.
It’s not a flawless production. There are several overlooked errors in the first printing, and some of the plot points are predictable from a distance. Thankfully, the largest plot twists will certainly catch the reader off guard. An additional note to the would-be reader the book contains a very brief appendix that may be of immense value for anyone with a fleeting or non-existent understanding of New Zealand history and society. I did not regret reading this section first.
I got this book based on all the great reviews. Maybe they read a different book than I TRIED to read. Story jumped all over the place. Don't know where sergeant Franks came in - quit reading.
Kept my interest, quite a bit about the lives of the immigrants to News Zealand. Interesting way of putting in newspaper reports
A very good book. Slow start but well worth reading. Skipped very few pages.
Great adventure story about New Zealand. The characters are strong, compelling and interesting. I loved it.
4.5 Well done, worth reading, but I find the expected genre conventions, e.g. the love interest sub-plot was obvious from the beginning get too predictable after a while.
I bought this book as I was fascinated to discover a book written with local (Manawatu, NZ) content, and I was curious to see what an overseas-written novel (with a NZ-born author) might be like. It proved absolutely engrossing and enthralling - and I ended up reading the whole book in one sitting. As I almost never read novels, that is remarkable. I'm a historian in the town/city the book is set around, and I 'should' be a hard sell, however, I found it extremely interesting, even though, being a novel, I knew to read 'through' the not-quite-history bits and to just see such things as part of a great read we are lucky to now have on our home area. I have since bought the second book in the series, and again I found myself to read the whole thing in one sitting, and I'm very much looking forward to the next in the series. For me, it has opened up a new interest in the history of coach transport in our area - and that on top of all the other things covered. My forebears lived in the wider area throughout the period covered in the book (and one was killed in the NZ Wars) - so I could have been a very hard-sell, but instead I loved the whole exciting story. I'm very happy to recommend this book and the second in the series, and roll on the publication of the next one.
