This had great potential as a love story across cultures (American/western and British aristocracy), but seriously, I found the book very strangely written, and unlike the other books I have read by this author. In a nutshell, I was very confused about whatever drove the H and h, and could not, for the life of me, figure them out. Even at the end. It almost felt like different people wrote different sections of the book- nothing really connected, and it was difficult to follow in many places. I admit I am not overly fond of cowboys as heroes, but Sam was kind of a sweet character in the first half - I don't know what happened to him in the second half. The H and h were so incredibly mean to each other- it was painful to read. Some sections were sorta sweet, others were "what just happened?" I'm not quite sure how I managed to finish it, as I have to be engaged by something in a story (plot, dialogue, intrigue, character development, history), or I lose interest quickly.
This just isn't Ivory's best, and she has written some fantastic historical fiction. I suggest "Untie My Heart" or "The Proposition." (Even the sex was better in those!)

It had a fun plot which I liked, but I had to skip several pages of explicit sex. Must delete so kids won't accidentally read it.
Loved it.
I was disappointed in this book, which is hard to say about any Judith Ivory work. The part where the couple is stranded on the moors is fun and exciting, but things go a bit flat after their return to civilization.
But trust me, still worth a read. The most frustrating thing I've noticed so far about Ivory's books is the lack of copy editing. I keep stumbling over errors and it interrupts the flow of the story.
I bought this book when it first came out and it is one of my all time favorite books by my favorite author, Judith Ivory. She just does not write enough to satisfy my need for her wonderful, complex, characters. I recently got a new tablet and am adding all my favorite hard cover books to my electronic collection. If you have not read Judith and/or this book, you are in for a treat.
I adored this book. Judith Ivory is one of my favorite romance authors. She has a nice crisp writing style and terrific characters. This is not your usual romance novel. Lydia is a modern woman in a non-modern time. This does not detract from the freshness of the story. The cowboy love interest is delightfully written. He is all man and sometimes does stupid things that he must grovel for later on in the story. There is a little bit of jealous hero syndrome in the story. But, there is no cheating involved so if that bothers you don't worry. Read this book. It is one of my keepers.
Started well , interesting plot , Texas cowboy & English lady stranded alone in the wilderness following a stagecoach crash Silly dialogue made it hard to read ie as they peed side by side in the bushes she asks him 'how he wipes himself after he pees!'
